This is actually a sign of a good seal, but it can be frustrating. Sub-Zero units create a partial vacuum when warm air cools down rapidly after closing. If it becomes nearly impossible to open, the Breather Valve (which equalizes pressure) might be clogged with frost. We can clean or replace this valve to make opening effortless again.

On Sub-Zero units, ice on the back wall usually indicates an issue with the Defrost Terminator or the heater element behind the panel. It means the unit isn't completing its self-cleaning cycle. We test the continuity of the defrost system components to restore the frost-free operation.

This often signals that the condenser (located at the top) is choked with dust, forcing the freezer compressor to overwork. Sub-Zero logic boards track run-times carefully. We perform a thorough condenser cleaning and clear the error codes to prevent compressor burnout.

Hollow cubes are a sign of restricted water flow, often due to a failing water inlet valve or a clogged sediment screen. If the ice maker is totally silent, the module motor might have stripped gears (common in older 500/600 series). We test the valve solenoid and the module voltage to pinpoint the failure.

This is distinct from ice on the wall. Ice on the floor indicates a frozen defrost drain tube. When the freezer defrosts, the water has nowhere to go and overflows onto the bottom, freezing into a sheet.
